What Do the Numbers and Letters on My Tires Mean?

posted on
Tires in Houston and La Porte, TXThe last time you had a flat or a blowout and had to replace your tire, did you struggle to find the correct replacement? When the salesman was offering you tires and asked you what size you needed, did you have a puzzled look on your face?

Tires are to cars, what shoes are to people. Finding the correct tire size for your car is important because a good tire that doesn’t fit is as good as no tire at all. Every car has a specific tire size. This measurement is always included in the owner’s manual of your car or on a placard on the driver’s door jamb. Tire sizes don’t come in small, medium, large, or extra-large. They come in letters and numbers. When you look at the way the tire size is listed, you’ll see something along the lines of P220/65R17.

It may seem scary to look at, at first, but let’s break it apart to understand it better.

P – Tire Type:
This letter identifies your tire as a Passenger Tire. These tires are built to handle the average passenger vehicle load.

220 – Section Width:
This is essentially the measurement of the tread width from sidewall to sidewall, usually done in millimeters.

65 – Sidewall Aspect Ratio:
This number represents the percentage of the tire’s section width, measured against the height. This controls the sidewall height of the tire.

R – Internal Construction:
This letter lets you know the internal construction of the tire. Almost all tires that you’ll come across is going to be R, which stands for Radial Construction.

17 – Rim Diameter:
This number lets you know what size of Rim the tire is designed for. This number MUST match the size of your car’s rim.
